Joschmi Type Specimen
Typography
Joschmi is a fascinating stencil-style typeface with a unique history—it remained incomplete for almost a century, featuring only six original letterforms (a, b, c, d, e, g). This project celebrates the ingenuity and modularity of the typeface while addressing its unfinished legacy.
By crafting wooden stencils for the existing letters and modular components to construct the rest of the alphabet, I sought to bring Joschmi to life in a hands-on and interactive way. Accompanied by a meticulously designed type specimen booklet that explores the typeface’s history and design characteristics, this project bridges the gap between Joschmi’s historical origins and its modern-day relevance.
Brief:
Select a display typeface and design an artifact along with a supporting type specimen booklet that captures and communicates the essence of the chosen typeface.
Concept:
I selected Joschmi, a stencil-style typeface notable for its unique story: for nearly a century, it remained incomplete, featuring only six letterforms (a, b, c, d, e, g). This project highlights the ingenuity and modularity of the typeface while addressing its historical incompleteness.
Solution:
To bring the essence of Joschmi to life, I designed wooden stencils for the original six letterforms and modular components that allow users to construct the remaining alphabet. The accompanying type specimen booklet provides insights into the typeface’s history, design, and potential applications. The artifact and booklet work together to showcase Joschmi as a versatile and timeless typeface, bridging its storied past with a practical, modern-day use case.
