Live Brief – UNESCO City of Literature, Nottingham

Nottingham, a UNESCO City of Literature, is renowned for its rich literary heritage and rebellious spirit. Tasked with a live brief, I set out to design a literary map tailored to the younger generation (ages 14–25), capturing the essence of the city while making literature engaging and accessible for a modern audience.

By blending Nottingham’s historical literary landmarks with contemporary cultural hotspots, the map bridges the past and present. It celebrates the city’s legacy through dynamic design, bold visuals, and interactive storytelling, bringing Nottingham’s literary culture to life in a way that resonates with younger audiences.

Brief:
Design a literary map of Nottingham tailored to younger audiences (ages 14–25). The map should capture the spirit of the city and inspire the younger generation to engage with its rich literary heritage.

Concept:
The map reimagines Nottingham’s literary legacy through a modern and abstract lens, blending historical landmarks with contemporary literary spaces. It features quotes and summaries from famous works written by Nottingham-based authors, creating an immersive experience that bridges the past and present. This project was created in collaboration with UNESCO City of Literature, celebrating Nottingham’s status as a vibrant hub of storytelling and creativity.

Solution:
The design employs a bold, energetic color scheme set against a black background, symbolizing Nottingham’s rebellious and defiant spirit. Modern, dynamic forms create visual interest, appealing to the younger demographic. The map also includes an interactive app component, offering a fresh and quirky user experience tailored to the target audience. Through this project, Nottingham’s literary culture comes alive in a way that feels accessible, engaging, and exciting for the next generation.

I’d love to connect! As a final-year Graphic Design student at Nottingham Trent University with experience in branding, marketing and user experience design for global events like COP, I’m eager to discuss new opportunities, collaborations, or projects.
